I have been around the world, and nothing compares to the natural beauty of Iceland. Why go in the winter, you are thinking? Because I was in New England for the holidays, and I did not want to pack for trips in two different climates. When you subscribe to minimalism, it applies to everything in your life, including the contents of your back pack. So I headed off for Iceland a couple of days after Christmas, and then on to Scotland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Why Luxembourg? Because it is there. Europe is beautiful in its own right, and this time I fell in love with it all over again, thanks to Edinburgh and Ghent. But it is Iceland that stole my heart.
To go in the winter is to freeze on each day of tourism. You freeze at night while chasing the Northern Lights, which escaped me. You freeze in the day time while taking in the geyser and the most magnificent Gulfloss waterfall. But your heart is warmed by the amazing beauty of this small northern Atlantic island, and by the genuine people who greet you at every turn.
Put Iceland on your short list. Go see it for yourself. I will go back in summer, rent a car, and circle the island. It is that amazing.
